1185: Minamoto defeats the Tiara Clan in the Gempi War.
1192: End of the Heian Period and the start of the Kamakura Period.
1192: Minamoto becomes the Shogun and Kamakura becomes the political capital.
1274: The first Mongol attempt to conquer Japan.
1281: The 2nd Mongol attempt to conquer Japan.
1336:End of the Kamakura Period and the start of the Muromachi period.
1336: Ashikaga Takauji becomes the shogun and takes over civil authority.
1542: Christianity comes to Japan through Jesuit missionaries.
1543: The Portuguese introduce firearms to the Japanese.
1568: Oda Nobunaga permits Christian missionary work and takes over civil authority.
1571: Oda Nobunaga attacks the great Tendai monastery of Enryakuji.
1580: End of the Muromachi period and the start of the Azuchi-Monoyama Period.
1582: General Akechi murdered Shogun Oda Nobunaga. One of Nobunaga's generals, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, reacted very quickly and defeated Akechi. He then took control of the country.
1591: Toyotomi Hideyoshi orders Tea Master ,Sen no Rikyu, to commit ritual suicide.
1592: Hideyoshi's armies invade Korea.
1598: Hideyoshi dies and his armies withdraw form Korea.
1602: End of the Azuchi-Monoyama period and the beginning of the Edo period.
1603: Ieyasu becomes the new shogun and establishes the Tokogawa shogunate.
1663: Shogun Tokogawa Iemitsu forbids foreign travel and Japan is almost completely isolated.
1701: A group of samurai who were left leaderless (becoming ronin) after their daimyo was forced to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) for assaulting a court official named Kira Yoshinaka. The ronin avenged their master's honor after patiently waiting and planning for over a year to kill Kira. In turn, the ronin were themselves forced to commit seppuku for committing the crime of murder.
1860: First Japanese embassy is established in the United States.
1865: End of Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji period.
1868: The end of the Tokugawa shogunate and the restoration of imperial power.
1873: The Japanese national government forms a conscript army.
1877: Satsuma Rebellion- Group of samurai rebel against the government but are defeated because of outdated technology.

Major Events
In 1274 a Mongol fleet of 900 vessels and more than 40,000 Mongols sailed towards Japan. They conquered small islands until they landed in Hakata Bay. The following day Mongol forces clashed with Japanese warriors. The Japanese were outmatched by the Mongols' superior cavalry tactics and advanced technology. That night a storm hit the island and sunk 200 vessels and killed 13,000 Mongols. The Mongols had no choice but to retreat back to Korea.
In 1542 a Portuguese ship ran aground on a Japanese island. The ship was transporting firearms which caused the Japanese to be introduced to firearm technology. This event also lead other European traders to voyage to Japanese soil.
In 1568, Japan attempted to invade China through the unification of their military. The unification failed and Japanese forces were repelled from Chinese soil.
